Road up the range from Cairns to Kuranda through the rainforest

Kuranda is one of the most popular day trips out of Cairns — a rainforest village up in the Atherton Tablelands range, famous for its markets, wildlife parks, and two very different ways to get there: the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway and the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. This guide breaks down your transfer options, realistic travel times, and the wildlife park tickets worth booking ahead.

Getting to Kuranda: Your Three Options

There are three real ways to get from Cairns up to Kuranda, and most visitors end up combining two of them.

1) Private Door-to-Door Shuttle

Our private shuttle picks you up from your hotel or accommodation anywhere in Cairns and takes you straight to Kuranda — no train timetable, no waiting at a Skyrail terminal, no per-person markup. It's one flat rate for the vehicle, up to 8 passengers, and because it's private (not shared with other bookings) you set your own schedule for the day.

2) Kuranda Scenic Railway & Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

The classic way to do Kuranda is the heritage train one way and the Skyrail cable car the other — it's an experience in itself, not just transport. The train winds through the Barron Gorge with lookout stops; Skyrail glides over the rainforest canopy with two boardwalk stations along the way.

We're a Queensland Rail agent for Kuranda Scenic Railway tickets and packages. A few of the combo options:

Kuranda Classic ExperienceRailway one-way + Skyrail one-way + coach transfer — from $140.50 adult, Heritage Class
Kuranda Wildlife ExperienceRailway + Skyrail + entry to Birdworld, Butterfly Sanctuary & Koala Gardens — from $202.50 adult
Kuranda Rainforest ExperienceRailway + Skyrail + Rainforestation Nature Park, Army Duck tour & Aboriginal culture experience — from $223.50 adult

Prices shown are Heritage Class, departing Cairns or Freshwater railway stations; Gold Class (individual lounge seating, host service, refreshments) is also available. Child and family fares apply. Email us at info@theguestman.com.au to arrange tickets, or contact Queensland Rail directly on 1800 577 245.

3) Combine Both — Shuttle One Way, Rail/Skyrail the Other

A lot of guests do exactly this: private shuttle up to Kuranda in the morning (so you're not tied to a train timetable and can go straight to the markets), then ride the Scenic Railway or Skyrail back down in the afternoon as the "experience" leg of the day. Just book the shuttle one-way transfer and note your return travel plans when you book.

What to Do in Kuranda

Kuranda's Heritage Markets are the heart of the village — art, crafts, and food stalls in a rainforest setting. Around the markets you'll find several wildlife parks, all part of the Wildlife Tropical North Queensland group, which we can arrange tickets for:

  • Kuranda Koala Gardens — general admission from $24 adult, koala patting photos available (subject to availability).
  • Birdworld Kuranda — walk-through aviary, from $24 adult.
  • Friends in the Rainforest — combo ticket for Koala Gardens + Birdworld, from $43 adult (collect both tickets at Koala Gardens first).
  • Kuranda Wildlife Experience — all three parks including the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, from $66 adult.
  • Kuranda by Design (VIP) — small-group guided Birdworld + Koala Gardens tour before public opening, including a koala patting photo, from $170 adult, max 6 guests.

These parks don't sell tickets online through third-party sites, so email info@theguestman.com.au and we'll arrange admission for you ahead of your visit.

Make It a Bigger Day

If you're already heading up the range, it's worth pairing Kuranda with one of our other Cairns day tours — many guests combine a Kuranda morning with a reef trip the next day. Browse reef & rainforest tours here, or if croc country is more your speed, see our Hartley's Crocodile Adventures transfer guide — some guests do both parks on the same trip using the Great Australian Wildlife Experience combo ticket.
