Taxi or Uber from Cairns Airport to the City: What It Really Costs
Updated November 2026 · Ian Muir, The Guest Man, Cairns
Short answer
For one or two people with light bags, a taxi or rideshare to the city usually costs around $30 and is hard to beat. Once you're a family or group of 3 to 8 with suitcases, a pre-booked flat-fare private transfer ($97.90 for the whole vehicle) is often the same price or cheaper per person, with no queue and no surge pricing. Details are on our Cairns Airport to Cairns City transfer page.
Cairns Airport sits about 7 km north of the city, and the drive to most Esplanade and CBD hotels takes around 15 minutes. That short distance is why the "which option is cheapest?" question has a different answer depending on how many of you there are and how much luggage you carry.
The four ways into town
| Option | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Taxi from the rank | Metered, around $30 to the CBD (more at night) | 1–2 people, no booking |
| Uber / DiDi | From about $30, varies with demand | 1–3 people, app users |
| Shared shuttle bus | Per-person fare, stops at several hotels | Solo travellers on a budget |
| Private transfer (us) | $97.90 flat for up to 8 people | Families, groups, lots of luggage |
Taxi and rideshare figures are estimates from public fare guides as at November 2026. Meters and surge pricing change, so treat them as a guide only.
When a taxi or Uber makes sense
If you're travelling light, landing in the middle of the day and only going a few kilometres, a taxi or rideshare is simple. The rank is right outside each terminal. Expect a longer wait when several flights land together, and rideshare prices rise when demand spikes, often in the evening.
When a private transfer works out cheaper
The maths changes once you have a group. A standard taxi takes four passengers, and five or more people with checked bags usually means two cars or a maxi taxi. Our private airport transfer is one Toyota Hiace for up to eight passengers with room for checked luggage, at one flat price that doesn't change with traffic or time of day (apart from the published after-hours and public holiday surcharges).
- 4 people: about $24.50 each
- 6 people: about $16.30 each
- 8 people: about $12.25 each
We also track your flight. If you land late, the driver adjusts and you aren't charged for the wait.
The hidden costs people forget
- Queues: a long taxi line after a full domestic flight can take longer than the drive itself.
- Child seats: taxis aren't set up for them. We add child seats for $15 each, and you choose them when you book.
- Night arrivals: meters and app prices rise late at night. Our after-hours surcharge (8pm–5am) is a fixed $25, shown before you pay.

Common questions
How much is a taxi from Cairns Airport to the CBD?
Public fare guides put it at around $30 for the roughly 15-minute trip, with higher rates at night. Taxis are metered, so the exact fare depends on traffic and your hotel.
Is Uber available at Cairns Airport?
Yes. Uber and DiDi pick up from signed rideshare zones outside the terminals. Prices vary with demand.
Is a private transfer cheaper than a taxi?
For one or two people, usually not. For families and groups of 4 to 8 with luggage, a flat $97.90 private transfer is often cheaper per person and avoids needing two cars.
Do you charge extra if my flight is late?
No. We track your flight and adjust the pickup. Waiting for a delayed flight costs nothing extra.
