The Cairns Esplanade is the city's backyard: a long waterfront park with a free swimming lagoon, a boardwalk, playgrounds, BBQs, fitness stations and plenty of shade. Here's how to make the most of it.
The Lagoon
The Esplanade Lagoon is a large, free, lifeguarded saltwater pool right in the city, with sandy edges and views over Trinity Inlet. It's the easiest safe swim in Cairns all year round. Check the council website for opening hours and any maintenance closures.
The boardwalk
The boardwalk runs north from the Lagoon along the waterfront towards Cairns North. Walk it early in the morning or at sunset, when you'll see wading birds on the mudflats at low tide, and joggers, families and dog walkers out enjoying the cooler air.

Muddy's Playground
Muddy's is a free playground and water-play area on the Esplanade foreshore in Cairns North. It's open every day from 9am to 7pm, and parts close for maintenance on some weekday mornings. There's shade, toilets and BBQs, so pack a picnic.
Markets and food
- Rusty's Markets in the city on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings for tropical fruit, coffee and breakfast.
- The Night Markets near the Esplanade for souvenirs and quick eats.
- Waterfront cafés and restaurants along the Esplanade and around the Pier.
Swimming safety
Swim in the Lagoon, not the ocean in front of the Esplanade. The waterfront is tidal mudflat, and crocodiles live in Cairns waterways.
