How far is Port Douglas from Cairns?

About 67 km north along the Captain Cook Highway. Allow around an hour of driving without stops, longer if you pull over along the way — and you should.

How long do you need in Port Douglas?

Four to five hours is comfortable for the town itself: Four Mile Beach, Macrossan Street, lunch and the marina. If you're adding a reef or rainforest tour, the tour sets the schedule and you plan everything else around it.

Can you visit Port Douglas and the Daintree in the same day from Cairns?

You can, but it makes for a very long day and you'll see both badly. The Daintree tours that depart this region pick up in Port Douglas or Mossman, not Cairns — so a Daintree day from Cairns means getting north first, then a full-day tour, then getting back. Pick one as the priority.

What's the best stop between Cairns and Port Douglas?

Palm Cove if you want somewhere to eat and walk. Rex Lookout if you want the view. Most people who enjoy the drive do both.

Is it better to drive or book a transfer?

Drive if you want to stop wherever you like and set your own pace. Book a transfer if you're a family or group, if you want everyone in one vehicle, or if the day involves a tour with a fixed check-in time.

Do reef tours from Port Douglas depart from the same place?

Calypso's Low Isles and Outer Reef trips both leave from Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in Port Douglas. Check-in is before departure, so build that into your travel time from Cairns.

Is Port Douglas better than Cairns?

Different, not better. Cairns is a working regional city with the airport, more tours and more choice. Port Douglas is smaller, quieter and closer to both the Daintree and the northern reef. Most visitors staying in Cairns find a day trip gives them enough of Port Douglas without moving hotels.

Cairns Airport Pickup: Where to Meet Your Driver at T1 and T2

Short answer

Pre-booked transfers don't wait inside the terminal. Collect your bags, text your driver, then walk to the Ground Transport pickup area. At the Domestic terminal (T2) it's at the western end; at the International terminal (T1) it's at the northern end. Our private airport transfer sends you a map for your terminal with your booking confirmation.

Cairns Airport has two terminals side by side: T1 for international flights and T2 for domestic. Each has its own pickup zones for taxis, rideshare and pre-booked vehicles, and the rules about who can wait where are strict. Knowing where to go saves a lot of wandering with a luggage trolley.

Domestic arrivals (T2)

Collect your bags from the carousel, then follow the signs to Ground Transport. Licensed charter and transfer vehicles like ours collect from the T2 Transport Arrivals area at the western end of the terminal. It's separate from the taxi rank and the public pick-up lane, so don't wait at the kerb out the front.

International arrivals (T1)

After customs and baggage, follow the Ground Transport signs to the T1 Transport Arrivals area at the northern end of the International terminal. International arrivals take longer to clear, so we time our pickup from your landing time plus a buffer.

Why we don't meet you inside

Airport rules limit how long vehicles can sit in pickup areas, and drivers waiting inside the terminal means paying for parking and being away from the vehicle. Instead we wait in the airport's holding area for ground transport operators and drive to the pickup zone when you text that you have your bags. It's quicker for you, because the van arrives as you walk out.

Common questions

Where do Ubers pick up at Cairns Airport?

Rideshare has its own signed zones outside each terminal, separate from pre-booked transfer pickups. Follow the rideshare signs.

Will my driver hold a name sign in arrivals?

No. We meet you at the Ground Transport pickup area for your terminal. Text us when you have your bags and we'll be there as you walk out.

What if my flight is early or delayed?

We track your flight and adjust. Early or late, you just text when you're ready.

Is the pickup area different for international flights?

Yes. International (T1) pickups are at the northern end of the International terminal; domestic (T2) at the western end of the Domestic terminal.
