Low Isles and Outer Reef Trips: Getting to the Port Douglas Marina From Cairns

Updated November 2026 · Ian Muir, The Guest Man, Cairns

Boats at the Port Douglas marina before a reef trip

Short answer

Port Douglas reef trips, including Low Isles and the outer reef, leave from the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina, with check-in usually between 8am and 9am. From Cairns that's about an hour's drive. Most visitors stay in Port Douglas the night before: arrive on our Cairns Airport to Port Douglas transfer the day before your trip.

Port Douglas is the gateway to Low Isles and the outer reef ribbons, and most boats leave from the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina in town. If you're flying into Cairns to do one of these trips, here's how to get there on time.

Check-in times

Check-in times vary by operator. As at November 2026, public listings show morning trips checking in between about 8am and 9.15am, and some afternoon trips checking in around 12.30pm. Your voucher is the final word, so check it before booking transport.

Option 1: Stay the night before (recommended)

Fly into Cairns, take a private transfer to Port Douglas ($273.90 for up to 8), and enjoy an evening on Macrossan Street. In the morning you're a short walk or ride from the marina. You're not up before dawn, and a flight delay won't cost you the trip.

Option 2: Day trip from Cairns or the Northern Beaches

Some operators run coach pickups from Cairns and the beaches. Check what's included with your ticket. If not, an early private transfer works for groups. Allow about an hour from the city and 40–50 minutes from Palm Cove. Bookings to or from Port Douglas need at least 24 hours' notice online.

Option 3: Straight from the airport

Possible only with an early flight and an afternoon trip, and even then it's tight. We don't recommend planning a reef trip around a same-day connection. The boats leave on time, and weather and flights don't always cooperate.

Getting back afterwards

Reef boats usually return mid to late afternoon. If you're flying out the same evening, leave plenty of buffer. Most people stay one more night. See planning your trip back to Cairns Airport.

Common questions

Where do Low Isles trips leave from?

Can I do Low Isles as a day trip from Cairns?

Yes. Some operators include coach pickups from Cairns; otherwise allow about an hour by road and book transport in advance.

Can I go straight from the airport to a reef trip?

We don't recommend it. Arrive the day before so a delay doesn't cost you the trip.
