A day on the Great Barrier Reef is the reason many people come to Cairns. There are dozens of options, so here's how to choose.
Outer reef or island?
- Outer reef trips travel further out to reefs like Moore, Saxon, Hastings and Norman. Expect the best coral and visibility, a longer boat ride and usually two or three snorkel or dive stops.
- Island trips to Green Island or Fitzroy Island are shorter, with beaches, walking tracks and snorkelling from the shore. They suit families, non-swimmers and anyone worried about seasickness.
- Pontoon trips moor at a platform on the outer reef with underwater observatories, semi-submersibles and plenty of space. Great for mixed groups.
Snorkel, dive or both?
You don't need any experience to snorkel, and most boats offer introductory dives with an instructor, no licence needed. Certified divers should look for trips with multiple dive sites.
Tips for a great day
- Book a couple of days ahead in peak season, and choose a calm-weather day if you can.
- Take seasickness tablets before you board if you're prone to it.
- Wear a stinger suit. Most boats provide them, and they also protect you from the sun.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen and a rash shirt, and drink plenty of water.

Getting to the boat
Most reef boats leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal in the city in the morning, and many offer pick-ups. Staying in Cairns North puts you a few minutes away, so there's no early-morning rush. Browse and book through our reef tours page.
Where we stay: Zion Escapes Tropic Towers
Our Tropic Towers apartment in Cairns North has two queen bedrooms, a full kitchen, a balcony and a resort pool and spa to relax in after a day on the water. It's about a five-minute walk to the Esplanade and a few minutes from the reef boats.
