Mission Beach is one of the least crowded stretches of coast in North Queensland — 14km of beach backed by cassowary habitat rainforest, about two hours south of Cairns. It's quieter and much less developed than the Northern Beaches or Port Douglas, which is exactly the appeal for a lot of travellers.

Mission Beach is best known as one of the most reliable places in Australia to spot a southern cassowary in the wild — the rainforest runs right down to the sand in places. It's also the departure point for Dunk Island day trips and a quieter alternative if you've already done the reef out of Cairns and want a beach day without the crowds.
